Diwali is a time to meet and greet our loved ones, prepare delicious sweets, wear new clothes, repaint the house and worship Goddess Lakshmi. This is also the time to burn firecrackers. While all the Diwali rituals are beautiful and sacred, burning crackers to make the day happy is not much appreciated. This is because it adds pollution to the atmosphere.

Diwali celebrations

Diwali has been celebrated in India since ancient times. It is a day to celebrate the victory of light over darkness. This is because according to Hindu mythology, it was the day when Lord Rama returned to his kingdom Ayodhya after being in exile for 14 years. He returned victorious by killing the demon Ravana and freeing Sita from her clutches.

Each year on Dussehra, effigies of Ravana are burnt all over India. It symbolizes the victory of good over evil. Diwali falls after twenty days. To celebrate Diwali, homes and markets are illuminated with beautiful lamps and lights. Rangoli is made to enhance the beauty of these places and decorative items are used. On this day people decorate their houses after welcoming them to welcome Goddess Lakshmi. It is believed that Goddess Lakshmi; The goddess of wealth only goes to places that are clean and beautiful.

People go to each other and exchange gifts as a part of Diwali celebrations. Many people host house parties on this day. This is a great time to bond with our relatives and friends. Many offices and residential societies host Diwali parties a day or two before the festival.

Children are especially ready to burn firecrackers on this day. They gather around and enjoy the festival by burning various types of firecrackers.

Diwali pollution: a matter of concern

Diwali is an auspicious day. The entire atmosphere filled with an air of celebration and gaiety at this time. However, it eventually filled with pollution. Burned firecrackers  completely closed on this day. Burning crackers a ritual described on Diwali. People burn thousands of fireworks in the name of ritual on this day every year. This increases the level of pollution in the atmosphere. The sky blurred and the results are harmful. This gives way to many health problems. It is especially unsafe for asthma patients, cardiac patients, pregnant women, elderly and infants. It is difficult to step on the later days of the festival as well as on Diwali.

Burning crackers not only pollutes the air but also causes noise pollution. This is especially troubling for sick and elderly people, young children, students and animals.

It is high time we should behave as responsible citizens and stop burning firecrackers to celebrate Diwali or any other occasion for that matter. We should celebrate environmentally friendly Diwali.

We should not say firecrackers and advise people around us to do the same. Parents should take responsibility for telling their children about the negative consequences of burning crackers. Children in schools also have to sensitized about this. This will help bring down the fire works on Diwali.

In addition to the measures that people can take on their end, it is important to place a check on the sale of crackers. The government should intervene for the same. The production and sale of firecrackers should  banned or at least some restrictions on the same.
